About Us

Kyoto Filmmakers Lab 2010 is filmmakers development camp which consists of 3 programs including shoot two short samurai films, seminars by Japanese awarded filmmakers, and networking party at historical film studios in Uzumasa, Kyoto.
The purpose of the Kyoto-lab is to share and learn Kyoto’s unique filmmaking system with studio artisans. Director is not a prior role – art director, lighting director (NOT gaffer), DP are very important role more than director at Studios in Kyoto. How else would Kyoto could made great samurai or action film with historical narratives like Shogun’s Samurai, Twilight Samurai, Shogun’s Assassins, and so on.

Kyoto Filmmakers Lab also aims to encourage Japanese filmmakers to apply film festivals or workshops internationally.

Kyoto Filmmakers Lab 2010 is presented by Kyoto Filmmakers lab 2010 organizing committee (Kyoto Prefecture Government, The Museum of Kyoto, Toei Company, Ltd., Kyoto Movie Studios, Shochiku Kyoto Studio Co., Ltd., Goethe-Institut Japan in Kyoto, and Directors’ Univ Co., Ltd.).

Camp Period

Kyoto Filmmakers Lab will take place from December 7-10, 2010.

*We have additional events (film screenings and seminars) which will be held from December 10 to 12.

20 persons

We will not be able to issue VISA document this year.  Please see the list of the countries (MOFA website) that have the visa exemption agreement with Japan before you apply.  We  Apologize for any inconvenience.

Area of Participants

Director, Cinematographer, Producer, Editor, Sound Composer, Production Designer, Grip, CG, VFX We also accept Video game designer, Animation director, and Animator this year.
Travel Expenses and Accommodation
Kyoto Filmmakers Lab will provide partial travel expenses (60,000 JP yen)  .*Participants from outside Japan.
Kyoto Machiya Studio will provide your sleeping place from December 7 – 12.

2010 Program Overview

Hands-on Jidaigeki
Jidaigeki is a Japanese term of “Samurai epic film.”UZUMASA, a neiborhood in Kyoto is a historical center of Japanese motion picture industry.From 1920s to 2000s, Toei and Shochiku had constructed new soundstages and back lot locations, most of which are still in use today. They also maintain large collections of samurai epic assets for film and TV.In Hands-On Jidaigeki, participants will shoot 5 minutes length short samurai film at motion picture studios in Uzumasa. Through out 3 days filming, all participants work at studios and learn Japanese traditional samudai epic film making process and skills. In addition, German finest filmmaker will join and give us advice.

*Regardless of expertise and experience, your role as a crew will be provided by Kyoto Lab 2010 committee.

*This workshop is not for beginners.

Participants are welcome to attend our related events on December 11 to 12 including HISTORICA (samurai epic film screenings and seminars) and other creative industry related conferences.
