About Kyoto Filmmakers’ Lab 2009
Purpose of the Kyoto Filmmakers’ Lab is : 1) to discover Kyoto’s historical movie assets, 2) to develop young talented filmmakers’, and 3) to provide a networking forum for film professionals. Kyoto Filmmakers’ Lab will also encourage participants to apply for global level filmmakers workshops all over the world. Kyoto Filmmakers’ Lab 2009 expects you who want to become a filmmaker or film professional to share this significant opportunity in the international trends of filmmaking.
Organizations
Kyoto Filmmakers Lab 2009 is presented by the Kyoto Filmmakers lab 2009 organizing committee (Kyoto Prefecture Government, The Museum of Kyoto, Toei Company, Ltd., Kyoto Movie Studios, Shochiku Kyoto Studio Co., Ltd., and Goethe-Institut Japan in Kyoto).
Overview
- Kyoto Filmmakers Lab will be held in Kyoto, Japan from September 27 to October 1, 2009.
- Deadline for entries is August 23, 2009.
- Numbers of participants: 30
- In order to apply Kyoto Filmmakers’ Lab 2009, you must work OR study one of these areas: screenwriting, feature or documentary filmmaking, producing, directing, cinematography, editing, sound design, film music composition, animation, art direction, production design, CG designer/programmer, videogame designer/programmer.
- All of participants must join “Hands-on JIDAIGEKI” from all of areas. Moreover, you cannot assign your role of Hands-on JIDAIGEKI workshop.
Programs
1. Hands-On JIDAIGEKI (samurai fiction)
1)Participants will divide into two groups.
2)Then each group will make short JIDAIGEKI films at Toei or Shochiku studios.
3)Call for scripts (screen writings) will be open only for participants after the selection of participants.
4)Toei and Shochiku studios provide back lots: “izakaya (Japanese-style bar)” or “nagaya (Edo period tenement district).” Props, costumes, actors, and technical equipments are provided from each studio.
In this hands-on workshop, Kyoto Filmmakers Lab will be invited cinematographer from Germany and samurai film directors from Japan as supervisors. Technical staff and assistants will also support this workshop.

4. Self-introductions and screenings of participants’ sample of works
5. Excursions (Toei / Shochiku studios)

- Kyoto Filmmakers Lab will provide partial travel expenses (60,000 JP yen).
- Jodo Shu (Mission) “Seiganji Temple” will provide your sleeping place from September 27 to October 1.
- Some participants may need entry visa in order to visit Japan, so please make sure your country’s condition from MOFA’s website below:
